The Younger Generation Has Been Ruining The World Since Forever

The youth of today — the so called “Millennials” — are nothing more than a bunch of lazy, entitled narcissists who would rather take pictures of their food than work an honest day’s labor. They are, without a doubt, the worst generation in history.

This one-directional opinion on the younger generation has been promoted in media, written in respectable publications and endlessly shared on the internet, yet it naively overlooks an even more prominent historical truth: the new generation is always perceived to be the group to bring the downfall of society.

The older generations have been complaining about it for years, as you can plainly see in these quotes from…

Peter the Hermit, 11th Century

“The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no respect for their parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as if they alone know everything and what passes for wisdom in us foolishness in them. As for the girls, they are foolish and immodest and unwomanly in speech, behavior, and dress.”

Seneca, 1st Century AD

“Our young men have grown slothful. There is not a single honorable occupation for which they will toil night and day. They sing and dance and grow effeminate and curl their hair and learn womanish tricks of speech; they are as languid as women and deck themselves out with unbecoming ornaments. Without strength, without energy, they add nothing during life to the gifts with which they were born — then they complain of their lot.”

Plato, 5th century BC

“Our youth have an insatiable desire for wealth; they have bad manners and atrocious customs regarding dressing and their hair and what garments or shoes they wear.”

Socrates, 5th century BC

“The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love to chatter in place of exercise.”

Hesiod, 8th Century BC

“I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words. When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly disrespectful and impatient of restraint.”

Assyrian Clay Tablet, 2800 BC

“Our Earth is degenerate in these later days; there are signs that the world is speedily coming to an end; bribery and corruption are common; children no longer obey their parents; every man wants to write a book and the end of the world is evidently approaching.”

To my peers in the worst generation in history: We are young, but that does not define us. We define ourselves. So let’s show the world what we can do before we start complaining about those damn kids in the Homeland Generation.

When he’s not writing for the Ambitious or defending your freedoms in the Air National Guard (sleep easy, citizens), he’s probably checking off everyday bucket list goals, like inventing something new or drinking a whiskey older than he is.
